Norscot DAF Trucks Ltd. opened for business on 1st November 1982 from premises at Gauchill, Kintore, Aberdeenshire. The eight thousand square feet building was located in a two-acre yard close to the town in a Birchwood setting. Founder Directors Bill Borthwick (Company Secretary) and Raymond Massie (Chairman) both former employees of DAF Trucks traded from this site until December 1987 when due to the successful acquisition of the Leyland and Freight Rover (LDV) franchises, had outgrown the Kintore site and moved to larger twenty thousand square feet premises presently occupied in Bridge of Don, Aberdeen. The franchise now known as Leyland DAF continued to prosper and again another five-year milestone for the company saw the acquisition of the truck and van Division of MacRae and Dick in Inverness. This gave better access to a larger customer base in the North of Scotland and secured the territory borders for the future. Bill and Raymond were keen to secure the long-term future of Norscot and to that end negotiated a management buy-in for George Barrack to purchase the total share holding in October 1999. Bill left the company and Raymond stayed on with George to assist in the smooth handover of ownership.
January 2001 saw another milestone with Norscot introducing Foden into the group and a year later the companies’ annual turnover hit the significant figure of £20 million. Norscot has been in the top five DAF dealers since 1983 – 2003, a remarkable twenty-year achievement and in 2003 were rated in a customer survey at joint number one in both sales and after sales disciplines.
Roll on the next twenty-one years.
Raymond Massie 30th October 2003
