The Norscot Truck and Van Ltd. XF105 Safety Demo shows that in the past few years an impressive number of technologies have been introduced that have increased comfort and safety. Besides EBS (electronically operated braking system), ASR (anti spin control) and Brake Assist (provides extra braking pressure in the event of an emergency stop), VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) and LDWS (Lane Departure Warning System) are also good examples.
This striking FTG XF105.510 is kited out with a host of safety and security features:
Adaptive Cruise Control A new option for the DAF CF and XF105 is Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW). By using a radar system, the road in front of the vehicle is monitored for slower moving traffic.
Adaptive Cruise Control identifies when the distance to a preceding vehicle is less than the set value and automatically adjusts the speed of the truck accordingly. ACC causes the vehicle to brake by – depending on the required deceleration – controlling the fuel intake, the engine brake and the gearbox, before operating the intarder and finally the foundation brakes in sequence. If this is not enough, the driver is alerted by a visual and acoustic signal that he himself must apply additional braking pressure. The ACC also lets the truck accelerate up to the set speed again when the distance to the preceding vehicle increases. The desired distance to the preceding vehicle can be set between 30 and 70 metres.
Forward Collision Warning continuously calculates – on the basis of the distance to the preceding vehicle and the speed being driven – whether there is sufficient room to avoid an emergency situation or a collision with the preceding vehicle. When a critical limit is exceeded, the system warns the driver through a visual and acoustic signal that they must intervene immediately.
DAF Night Lock and DAF Telematics In addition to Xenon lighting and ‘Axle Load Monitoring’ – which sends a warning if the legal axle load is exceeded – the XF105 Safety Demo vehicles also include the DAF Night Lock. This is an easy to operate mechanical ‘dead lock’ for the doors to protect the driver against cab intrusions. Further, the demo trucks also incorporate the DAF Telematics data communication system, which makes message transfer possible between the truck and home base. On the screen in the dashboard, a camera picture can be projected from cameras mounted on either side of the truck for extra safety.
The NORSCOT Safety Demo will be at The Black Isle Show on Wednesday 5th / Thursday 6th August 2009.
